Minor release that includes:

* Speed improvements around key lookup & thread safety (thanks to crackleware)

Release that does some polishing around existing functionality & introduces a new function caching feature.

This is a stable release that finalizes ~all of the py2-3 compat issues as well as some utilities around backends
