The intent is to provide a small amount of protection against attackers who do not know your hash domain from
even connecting in the first place, before they even get to your application protection. It should not be relied on, because subdomains were not meant for this purpose, and logfiles or analytics, or snoopers on your home network can break it, but nonetheless I expect it to filter out the majority of easy attacks.
