Workaround for new version of PyNio closing files too early

Bug Fixes to get it to work with PyNio 1.5.0

Character string variables are now recognized as type 'c' in PyNio 1.5. version 1.4.1 recognizes them as 'S1'. Now catching both.

Error is seen as it tries to average time variant strings.

Bug fix for when a var has a missing value attribute, but is not used within the variable field

Contains bug fix if a metavar doesn't appear in each file
